Ryan in his rocker
Originally uploaded by yellowhandman.
Testing Flickr again, this time with a real photo of Ryan, asleep in his rocker. The main thing I'm trying to do is figure out the optimal size to export to Flickr, from iPhoto.
BTW I uploaded this to Flickr using the handy third-party export plug-in available at connectedflow.com, which is the website of the guy who also writes the xjournal mac client for LJ.I've just started watching my second batch of Ring Of Honor DVDs. Now this is wrestling!
For those who can't be bothered to click through to the Wikpedia entry I just linked, ROH is a relatively young independent wrestling promotion in the US, that has built its reputation on being back-to-basics, in the sense that the emphasis is on the wrestling and winning titles, instead of WWE-style soap operatics. "Run-ins" (when other wrestlers jump in to affect the result of matches) are rare and frowned upon, and most matches end with a winner and loser, instead of the messy, frustrating DQ (disqualification) non-endings so common in WWE.
Initially, I found it hard to get used to the handheld, grainy video look of ROH DVDs (and that is basically the only way to watch ROH, other than flying to the US and attending their tiny shows), but the more I watch, the more I like it, and the more I realise how xian WWE has become. Incidentally, two of ROH's top stars - CM Punk (who has just signed for WWE...damn) and Samoa Joe (also seen on TNA on ESPNStar) - have their own LiveJournals.
Watching ROH reminds me that, ultimately, good wrestling is when two guys manage to convince you that they are beating the hell out of each other, basically by really beating the hell out of each other. Good wrestling looks real because the wrestlers are giving their all, risking life and limb and suffering real pain to put on a good show. The ending may be predetermined, but the effort is real. ROH wrestling looks like fighting, not dancing or acrobatics, and you can't help but respect the energy that these guys put into their work.
I still watch and follow WWE, but more for the storylines (like reading comics!). For real wrestling, ROH - or even TNA - is the thing to watch.
Pierluigi Collina retires from refereeing
there'll never be another like him. the first (and so far, only) ref that really struck fear in the hearts of players, while commanding their utmost respect. the circumstances of his retirement are rather unfortunate, but it's perhaps also true that he did become too much of a star for his own good - it was okay to be larger than life on the pitch, but he should've maintained a low profile off it.
still, i can't think of anyone i'd rather have refereeing a united match, especially after the crap refereeing that was on display in the premiership this past weekend...
the CNN studio anchors needs to get slapped...in the past half hour, i've heard these two "gems":
"It's not much of a shelter of last resort if the roof is falling in, is it? Haha."
- to the former mayor of New Orleans, who surprisingly didn't hit the anchor, referring to the roof of the Louisiana Superdome, a portion of which has collapsed.
"OK, don't go away, or should i say, don't blow away..."
- to a rather distressed-looking field reporter, who was standing on a pier and in obvious danger of being swept away...
having said that, kudos to the field reporter who took a moment to say hi to his son at home, reassuring him that daddy was fine and would be home in a few days.
wah lau...how much do they pay these CNN reporters?!
It's one thing to report from a war zone, wearing a flak jacket and helmet and taking cover, but you CAN'T hide from something like this hurricane...right now there's this guy standing on a bridge or something, with a huge barge with crane on top floating freely next to it, banging into it.
Take cover, dude!
they cut back to the studio, and veronica whatsherface was stuttering at first...probably thinking how glad she is to be based in the studio...
Sheesh...this is starting to sound like a Michael Bay movie...New Orleans in danger of being submerged, with 10,000 people holed up in the New Orleans Superdome to ride out the storm...
I was reading some of the articles on CNN.com, and noticed that - if you look at the URLs of the articles - their webmasters are storing one of the articles in a subfolder named "katrina.doomsday". Wow.
was reading another blog where someone was reminiscing about life in RH, and dug this out of my harddisk...my final year room!
can click on the photo for the full-size version...
(btw, the photo is a little weird because it was put together from three (non-digital) photographs, back in 1998 after i graduated...think i was using a powermac 7300 running photoshop 3 or something like that...)
The Wild Geese : 30th Anniversary Edition is released on 27 September. Already ordered mine!
I'm pretty sure that any male of around my age remembers this film...Richard Burton, Richard Harris and Roger Moore (at the peak of his fame, and before he was too old) as aging mercenaries leading a rescue mission into some dodgy African country. A real Boy's Own adventure film, which together with A Bridge Too Far, ensured that my imaginary-weapon-of-choice when playing war in primary school was a British Sten gun, with the magazine sticking out the side.
In fact, the Sten was probably the movie machine gun of the 1970s, until Uzis became more popular ('cuz you can hold TWO of them!).
What gun did YOU use when playing war?
No more blood in Ryan's poo-poo! Hooray!
Of course, he celebrated by peeing on me...twice...while i changed him. Whatever.
:)
Firstly, I personally felt that Jermaine Jenas' red card against Arse was completely justifiable...he could've broken Gilberto's leg.
Having said that, WHAT IS THE POINT OF RESCINDING A RED CARD? Sure, at least the guy escapes any further suspension, but it doesn't make up for the fact that the ref f***ed up. Who knows what might've happened if Jenas had stayed on the pitch?
This isn't the first time it happened, but it really shouldn't. Or at least, the ref should also face some consequences. Of course, imposing any sanctions on the refs would probably mean that no reds are ever rescinded again, so it might not be a solution either.
Oh well...altogether now...REFEREE KAYU!
At least that's something all football fans can agree on...
